Out here, it’s just the three of us and nature. How might we extract interesting, useful lessons for our kids, wherever we are?

Today’s physics lesson involved stone skipping. The key to a good skip lies in spinning the stone – spin stabilizes an object, keeping it from falling into the water. But it goes much deeper than that, incorporating velocity, mass, tilt, angle of attack and water density.

Physics by the river.

We got into the principle of momentum conservation and learned that achieving the necessary velocity was our key inhibiting factor. Going out to try again tomorrow.

We’ve been doing at-home science projects for years! Here are a few of our favorites (I used to post these daily on a Chinese blog):

With everything going online, our family will maintain social
distance AND do some #roadschooling for the next month.

Even the planning has been fun! From establishing our family road rules to packing, to downloading an excellent book set in each state we will visit – I can’t wait for California (She’s going to love Of Mice and Men and Island of the Blue Dolphins!)

I’ll share at least once a day, the interesting moments of our trip. Today, we figured out how to use doggie seat belts, and Laini took her first online class from the RV.

What are some new skills you’re learning while operating from home? And what unique, memorable experiences can you create for your family during these unusual times?

If there’s anything you’re interested to see or hear about, please leave a note. Let the adventure begin!
