In a recent interview with Emotive Group, I shared some thoughts on what leaders should be thinking about in the COVID-19 world.

Exercise a new level of agile strategic thinking: We need to stop thinking of “post-COVID” as a solid milestone. Rather than expecting to land on a “new normal,” we can prepare ourselves for a series of “next normals”.

Allow shared purpose to unearth new capability: Sports and auto manufacturers are producing ventilators, while distilleries are pivoting to producing sanitizers. Many companies are identifying new capabilities, even as they challenge old sacred cows. They’re serving new needs and streamlining processes—and making money!

Interrogate the data: We must recognize that the world has changed. Consumer habits, media consumption, online behavior, and digital engagement have all taken a quantum leap. As we seek insights from our databases, let’s exercise discernment and not allow old data to inform new decisions. Obsolete data isn’t that which was collected and shared in 2018… it’s as recent as January 2020.

Many of you may have heard that the Chinese word for “crisis” can be represented as “Danger + Opportunity.” JFK once inspired with this quote: “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word, ‘crisis’. One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger – but recognize the opportunity.”

Unfortunately, he was slightly off the mark. Yet, understanding the Chinese word for crisis can still inspire a new perspective.

Crisis = 危机 (wēi jī) where 危(wēi) indeed translates to “danger, to endanger.” However, 机 (jī) by itself doesn’t really translate to “opportunity”. 机会 (ji hui) means “opportunity”, but an accurate translation of 机(jī) by itself is more like “a crucial point, when something begins to change.”

See, when paired with other words, 机 (jī) can take on many different meanings. 机敏 (jī mǐn) means “agility” where the latter character represents quickness. 机智 (jī zhì) translates to “quick-witted or resourceful”, because the latter character means wisdom. It’s about how words are combined:

Agility = “a turning point” + “quickness”

Resourceful = “a turning point” + “wisdom”

Crisis = “a turning point” + “danger”

I think this combined effect is even more enlightening than the oft-touted “danger + opportunity” meme, because today, we do find ourselves facing a perilous situation in which many elements are at play. We are situated at an inflection point (#flattenthecurve), where things may progress in a variety of different directions. So, what do we do?

In a crisis, we must remain cognizant of the danger and do everything we can to drive for a positive outcome.

I chatted with frog design about designing outstanding customer experiences in China. The principles are relevant anywhere, I think.

I recently had the great opportunity to talk with frog design on customer experience. Our days are peppered with so many acronyms: CX, UI, HCD, AI, MR….. what’s really important at the end of the day?

You can view the full interview here. To me, designing an outstanding customer experience boils down to:

1. Humility: Being open to what we don’t know or haven’t experienced. A deep inquisitiveness to better understand the daily lives of those we serve, in order to better delight. It’s only when we understand, that can we become empathic to solve for what our customer needs… and design against those needs in a relevant, meaningful and delightful way.

2. Customer first: In successful corporate environments, conversations aren’t about our strategy and what we hope to accomplish. Verbage isn’t about what we hope to achieve, or how many X’s we have Y’ed. Rather, it’s about what customers need and want, and what we need to do to deliver just that.

3. Common vision: When teams are aligned to one joint set of KPIs, it’s much easier to row together. Setting people and organizations up for success means we define meaningful, aligned targets and clearly communicate them, consistently. When everyone’s headed toward the same goal, they are collectively set up for success.
