In our eighth #taxichat, I asked Laini if she’s ever felt like she had to sacrifice too much for our Spare Room. We didn’t discuss the question ahead of time, and frankly, I was a little trepidatious in even asking the question (I guess you can tell from the expression on my face!)

Over the years, my husband and I have tried hard to balance time spent with our daughter and with the kids we’ve cared for. On one hand, I am glad Laini hasn’t ever experience the potential loneliness of being a single child; as far as she can remember, she’s always had a sibling, older or younger, male or female.

Also, we’ve spoken often about that fine line between entitlement and privilege. She knows that because of our lifestyle, compared to 99% of the world, we live a privileged life. But what keeps us from sliding into a sense of entitlement?

One word: Gratitude.

Feeling grateful for what we have, recognizing with humility, that we don’t deserve all we have…

that we haven’t earned all of this entirely on our own…

that it could all change overnight…

These things keep us feeling a deep sense of appreciation for all that we have.

And importantly, it prompts us to want to share what we have with others.

So, here’s Laini’s answer – when I asked her if she’s ever felt like she had to sacrifice too much.
