I recently connected with Technology Partners CEO Lisa Nichols, who interviews leaders from around the world to share their stories. She showcases “the something extra that every leader needs” to influence, encourage, and be a true leader in our daily lives. And in our episode of Something Extra podcast, we talked about bringing on the confetti!

What’s your “Something extra”?
If you’re not sure, here are a few categories to get you started:
- Skill or Capability. Perhaps your “something extra” comes in the form of a unique or particularly finely honed capability.
- Personality Trait. Are you known for your humor, your wisdom, or as the trusted advisor in times of need?
- Life Experience. Have you lived through something that most have not? If so, consider the value of that experience.
In fact, each of these “something extras” mirrors part of your Offer. This concept is such a great fit with my book, The Spare Room, where I help you define your offer. You see, your Offer is that unique combination of skills, experiences, personality traits and resources that makes you, you.
So, what’s your Offer?
I understand, we can feel a bit uncomfortable discussing things we think we’re good at. “Are we really good at this?” “Does this sound braggy?” Yet, if you’re not claiming the things you bring to the table, you’re sub-optimizing your contribution to this world. And everyone loses out as a result! So own your Offer, please.
In that spirit of vulnerability, I offer my own Social Legacy construct here. You’ll see my own consolidated Offer here. To be clear, this does not describe me every day. It describes me when I’m at my best. And that’s ok. This is what you bring to the table – it’s your something extra.

Did you notice in my Offer, I listed “generosity of spirit”, “humor and fun” and “creativity”? Again, at my best, I think I bring these to the party. And in a nutshell, that can look like… confetti! As we recorded the podcast, I shared a moment when I worked at Starbucks. I remember one of my team leaders commenting as I walked into the room, “Here comes the confetti!” What a fun thing to hear when one enters the room!
I’d love to hear what you think your own “something extra” is. And if it’s also confetti, we’re going to have to throw a party!
